classic car, deformed lady, birds at the starbucks

dream from this morning:

i'm in a classic 1950's car and it's in pristine condition. everyone tells me it's a bad idea to use this for doing repo work but i don't listen. i'm cruising around the neighborhood. someone is standing on a freshly cut lawn. i turn towards the house on what i think is a driveway but it's actually a sidewalk. my classic car doesn't fit. my left fender is knocking bricks off a retaining wall as my right mangles some bushes. somehow i'm not concerned.

now i'm in the upper part of some building. there are a lot of people coming and going up and down the stairs. i see what looks like a person but severely deformed. it's a woman who has no real arms or legs. she's lumping down the stairs and it looks painful. people are stepping over her and ignoring her. i rush over and pick her up in my arms. we make small talk as i carry her to where she is going. she is thankful.

i am driving again. i pull my car into a starbucks parking lot. it's packed. i walk in and get in a long line. there is a small dark wooden cabinet next to the line of people. i hear birds screaming and squawking. i look down and there are two quaker parrots and what looks like a cross between a cockatoo and a raven, but it's all white with a black beak. i lean down and look into the cages. i see the cage has multiple sections. on the far left there is a cockatiel. i stand back up and am wondering why they have birds tucked away in the starbucks. suddenly i have a stinging pain in my hand. one of the quaker parrots is biting me. i lean down again and talk to them. the bird turns away from me and squeezes out an egg after a couple tries. it's covered in blood.

a guy points to the gas station sign across the street. he asks me if that is the normal price of gas. i look over. the sign says Conoco or something and $3400 for a gallon of gas. i tell him the price is high, but not that high. must have been some kids playing a prank.

eventually i am talking to a host at a tiki bar. i'm trying to reserve it for a private party. the guy is rolling his eyes at everything i say. i am not cool, i get it.

later chris coy shows up and i give him back two sets of keys.

that's all i could remember.

the end?

Drooler Interview

Drooler will be at State Street Pub Sunday 2/2 along with Omen Stones (Richmond, VA) and Lavaborne.

I hadn't had a chance to catch Drooler yet, so naturally I had a few questions for the band and sent them over to Will and Jarrod.

SJ: Obvious first question: How would you describe the band?

WILL: Well when I joined the band, James had originally told me it's like Snapcase meets Black Flag and I'd say that fairly accurate. 90's metalcore with some hardcore punk influences.

SJ: When did you guys get together and how did all of that go down?

JARROD: James and I started jamming wanting to be in a band, but his house got broken into and his guitar amp was stolen. I didn’t have an amp at the time so that stopped it for awhile. I finally bought an amp maybe 6-8 months later. James and I jammed on some songs for quite awhile before he invites Tim over for Vas’s jams. We went through about five vocalists before James invites Will into the fold. So really this thing has been around for nearly two years. Also we do not play any songs that we started out playing.

SJ: What kind of topics do you guys cover in your lyrics?

WILL: Our lyrics cover topics such as depression, suicide, domestic abuse, drug abuse, capitalism, government... The standard punk rock topics.

SJ: Your take on Indy's Punk scene these days?

WILL: I think there are some great active bands right now in the Indy punk scene. LIB, Big Hog, Kiddo, Mr Clit, Chelshots. Maybe a little too much drama between the people in the scene sometimes, but I think that's probably every city.

SJ: Social media, good, bad or great?

WILL: I'm pretty active on social media. I think it can be great and it can also be terrible, depending on how it's used. I've had my fair share of both the good and the bad. Aside from the social aspect of social media, I think it's a shame how government, law enforcement, and employers use it to collect data on citizens without them really being aware of it.

SJ: Who are your biggest musical influences?

JARROD: Musical influences is always a tough question. Tony Hawk pro skater sound track, 90s hardcore, and Wu Tang.

SJ: How did you get started singing in bands?

WILL: My first band ever was called Team Cynical. I think I was like 15. It was essentially a Christian punk band. Laughable I know, but I was raised in a very religious household. I always had a unique voice because of an incident that I had swallowing some bug poison when I was a child. My whole life everyone always told me I should do vocals in a metal band, so here we are now.

SJ: What was the last record you listened to?

WILL: Cancerslug "Alabama Bloodbath" is probably the last thing I listened to. I met those guys on the "Pussytalk" tour like 8 yrs ago or whatever at the 5th Quarter and loved them ever since.

SJ: Any story behind the band name?

JARROD: I saw someone post the word on Instagram and thought it sounded like a cool band name. Also we all voted and Drooler was the winner.

SJ: The show on 2/2 is the same night as the Superbowl. Any feelings on the NFL or pro sports?

WILL: Oh man don't get me started on sports. I really am not a sports fan at all. Maybe it's the fact that I've never been good at sports, but I think they're a waste of time. I think it's sad that some people will burn cop cars and riot in the streets over sports, but no one seems to care that much about detained immigrant children dying in custody, murders done by police, poisoned water in Flint, wildfires in California etc. Maybe if people cared enough to riot over those kinds of issues then our government would actually do something to fix major issues we're facing.

SJ: Craziest shit you've ever seen at a show?

WILL: I've been to so many insane shows, it's hard to pick just one instance. I saw Municipal Waste in Columbus OH once in like 2005 with Killed In Action at that bar Bernies. There was some scuffle outside between some college dudes and some punks, and the jock dudes were run off. Well during the MW set, Tony from MW screams "THE JOCKS ARE BAAAACK!!" Everyone ran outside and it ends up being like 100 kids chasing these 3 college dudes down the street. It was like a movie. Also, saw Killed In Action with Think I Care in someone's garage... Someone started up a lawnmower and was running through the pit with it when they cut apart all the mic and instrument cables. Other things I've seen at shows include people throwing tv's, setting mattresses on fire, fireworks, people getting beer bottles busted over their heads in fights, people pissing on the front door of a church, all kinds of shit. I feel like I've got some Vietnam war stories from the shows I've been to.
